Biography:
Jose Ramos grew up in El Paso, TX. In March 2000, he joined the Navy to become a Hospital Corpsman. As a Corpsman, he spent his entire career serving alongside Marines as a platoon “Doc.” He served one tour in Afghanistan and two in Iraq.
On July 28, 2004, Jose was hit by a rocket and severely injured while serving in Iraq. He awoke a few days later in Bethesda Medical Hospital with near- fatal injuries that included a left arm amputation, lung contusions, left leg nerve damage, bulged discs in the lumbar region, and numerous shrapnel wounds.
Within four months of being injured, Jose ran the New York City Marathon and soon after cycled from Washington, D.C. to Long Island, NY. He also competed in numerous other races including a 26.2 mile trek in sand dunes while wearing full combat gear. In 2009, Jose decided to compete in triathlons to further challenge himself while raising awareness for those with disabilities, especially severely injured service members. With CAF’s support, Jose has since competed in multiple Sprint and half-distance triathlons.
“CAF Operation Rebound has helped me not only challenge myself physically but mentally as well, having to find new ways to overcome the challenges of a disability enables me to overcome the challenges of life.” – Jose Ramos
The generosity of supporters like you has given Jose opportunities to push himself in pursuit of even greater athletic achievements.
